School Programmes

Our workshops are designed to captivate and engage young minds, bringing history to life and inspiring a love for the maritime world.

All workshops are aligned to the National Curriculum and, with the appropriate pre information, can be adapted to be fully accessible to all students.

School Workshops at the Classic Boat Museum

1. Safety at Sea:

This workshop teaches essential skills and knowledge about safety at sea, equipping students with practical understanding and awareness of the maritime environment.

Learn too about our local RNLI history, the story of the first lighthouse on the Island, flying lifeboats designed by an Islander and the lifeboats that could have been used on the Titanic.

A workshop where history meets STEM. Learn about two of the most influential women engineers who lived on the Island and left an indelible mark on boatbuilding.

Then dive into the world of maths and physics as we use our own mini test tank to measure distance, speed, force and acceleration of model boats.

Ian Vallance is the Education officer at both the Shipwreck Centre and the Classic Boat Museum.

He is a former deputy headteacher and school inspector (but don’t hold that against him!) and has lived on the Island for the past 15 years.

As a qualified scuba diving instructor he has a very practical experience of the Island’s coasts and has a real passion for introducing young people to the rich heritage of our fascinating locality.
